MORALITY WITH MRS. HG Welcome To Morality! This semester we are going to study the teachings of the Catholic Church on morality in depth. We will have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the role of grace and the importance of prayer and gain a deeper appreciation of the role of helping each person live more fully their Christian faith and grow in holiness and their relationship to God. Text: The required textbooks for this course is: Armenio, Peter V.. . Our Moral Life in Christ. Woodbridge: Midwest Theological Forum, 20008. ISBN#: 978--1-890177-69-0 A Catholic Bible, preferably The New American Bible. I will require supplemental readings about the sacraments in addition to readings from the text. Daily Supplies. Students are required to bring the following materials daily to class: a 3 ring binder or notebook with 4 dividers, a blue or a black ink pen and a highlighter. Students may also be asked to bring in a Bible for classroom assignments from time to time. The notebook should be used only for religion class and will be graded at least once a quarter if not more often. Class and Homework: You are expected to turn in all assignments on time. Homework, other than projects will be lowered 30% for each day that it is late. Projects are lowered 40% for each day that they are late. A zero is averaged in for all missing work. All assignments must be typed unless otherwise specified. All class work must be completed in blue or black ink. I do not accept work completed in pencil, red, orange, pink, turquoise, purple or green pen. I count off for errors in spelling and capitalization or papers that have been bent, folded or mutilated. Please check your work for spelling, grammar and punctuation and to see if what you have written actually makes sense. Please use dictionaries. I expected you to do your best and I pledge to do my best as well. Homework is posted on my website: www.mrshgsplace.com. You may also access my website from the school website by clicking on my name in the list of religion teachers in the academics section of the school website. If you do not understand an assignment, please ask me to clarify! I do not bite! Advice is always free. I am available before and after school in my classroom, 103. You may also contact me through email, annehg@verizon.net or call me at 703-266-8805. You do not need a rabies shot to call me! There will be required journal articles each quarter. There will be a separate information sheet handed out detailing the specific requirements for the news articles as well as a calendar of due dates. These journal responses must be typed and the article must be current, no more than two weeks old in date. Grading Scale: 10%: class participation 25%: class and homework 25%: projects 25%: tests 15%: quizzes Please note, unless you are in the actual process of dying a painful death, all homework must be turned in by the end of class or it is late. I do not waive Late grades for any of the following reasons: “My dog ate my homework; my pet boa constrictor swallowed my book bag; I was kidnapped by aliens from outer space/reality TV casting agents/the Mafia/gypsies; I couldn’t remember the homework; I lost my book or notebook, etc. If you miss a class as a result of a tardy or early dismissal, you are required to turn in the assignment to me or have it date stamped and put in my box or it is late. If you are in school and leave without turning in the assignment to me, it is late. There will be a test and quiz for each chapter and unit. Info from one chapter may find its way on to a later test of quiz. All quizzes will be open notebook and open brain. All tests are strictly open brain. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes from other students, If you are absent on the day before a test or quiz is given and no new material is given, you are expected to take the test or quiz with everyone else. All make up tests and quizzes are essay- no exceptions. We will have a number of research projects and journals due each quarter. All journals and written reports must be submitted to www.turnitin.com and you are required to turn in a hard copy as well. All papers are due at the beginning of class, both to www.turnitin and a hard copy as well or you will receive a late grade. You may not turn in reports by email. There will be at least one technology project per quarter. Technology projects must be uploaded to www.pbworks.com by the start of class on the due date or the project is late. Cheating: Any student who is caught cheating* will receive a zero for that work and will be written up. *(Cheating is defined as taking another’s knowledge or work without permission.) n.b. Any student who turns in the same assignment as another with font and text size changed is not doing his or her own original work. This is cheating. Helping another student with a homework assignment is not giving or providing them with answers that the student could not find. Copying another student's homework or giving your homework to another student to copy is cheating Please refer to the student handbook pp. 3, 36-37 for more information regarding the honor code and academic honesty. All students will be required to write out and sign the Honor Code pledge on all graded assignments. The pledge is found on page 3 of the handbook and states: “I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment.” All assignments turned in without the honor code and signature will receive an automatic 30 points off. You may not substitute PVI for the honor code. Major Projects: There will be two major projects during this semester; A separate project sheet will be given for this project. Final Exam: All students will be required to complete a comprehensive final exam given during the semester exams week. The weight of the exam is 20% 0f the final grade for the course, each quarter grade is worth 40% of the course. COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT Each student is required to perform at least 10 hours of service per religion class per semester. For juniors, this service is required to be “direct” service. “Direct Service” is service that is given directly to a marginal population: individuals who are mentally, emotionally or physically handicapped, the elderly, or homeless.
