HONORS WORLD HISTORY

Welcome to Honors World History.  This year, our World History course  introduces you to the fundamental history of what we call the “western world.” We will also briefly examine the impact that other civilizations and cultures in Asia, Africa, Islam  and the Western Hemisphere have on Western Europe This course traces the development of “western” ideas, outlook, and institutions.  It begins with the ancient Near East, then progresses through Greece, Rome, Asia, Africa, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation, colonization of the Western Hemisphere, Enlightenment and Revolutions in England and France, the industrial revolution, and nationalism.

The required textbook used for this course is:

Spielvogel, Jackson J.  World History.  Columbus: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 20010.

          ISBN978-0-07-879981.

 Daily Supplies.

Students are required to bring the following materials daily to class: a 3 ring binder or notebook with 4 dividers, their textbook, a blue or a black ink pen and a highlighter.  Students will be asked to bring in colored pencils from time to time. The notebook is to be used only for history and will be graded at least once each quarter.

 Class and Homework:

You are expected to turn in all assignments on time. Homework, other than projects , will be lowered 25% for each day that it is late. Projects are lowered 30% for each day that they are late. A zero is averaged in for all missing work. No late work is accepted after four days.  If you are absent without turning in an assignment that has been collected and were in class the day the assignment is due, the days of your absence will be considered as late. A note  or email from a parent will not  eliminate the penalty for a late assignment.

All homework assignments must be typed unless otherwise specifiedAll class work must be completed in blue or black inkI do not accept work completed in pencil, red, orange, pink, purple, turquoise or green penI count off for errors in spelling and capitalization or papers that have been bent, folded or mutilated.    Please check your work for spelling, grammar and punctuation and to see if what you have written actually makes sense. Please use dictionaries.  I expected you to do your best and I pledge to do my best as well.

We will be writing on a regular basis.  All writing must be submitted to www.turnitin.com as well as in written form.  The submission to www.turnitin.com must be made by the beginning of class on the due  date assigned.  Failure to submit to www.turnitin.com or turn in a hard/printed copy on time will result in a late grade.

Homework is posted on my website: www.mrshgsplace.com.  You may also access my website from the school website by clicking on my name in the list of Theology or Social Studies teachers in the academics section of the school website.  If you do not understand an assignment, please ask me to clarify!  I do not bite! Advice is always free.  I am available before and after school in my classroom, 103.  You may also contact me through email, annehg@verizon.net or call me at 703-266-8805. You do not need a rabies shot to call me! Students have talked to me and lived to tell the tale!

 Grading Scale:

10%: class participation

25%: class and homework

25%: projects

25%: tests

15%: quizzes

Please note, unless you are in the actual process of dying a painful death, all homework must be turned in the beginning of class or it is late.  I do not waive late grades for any of the following reasons: “My dog ate my homework; my pet boa constrictor swallowed my book bag; I was kidnapped by aliens from outer space/reality TV casting agents/the Mafia/gypsies; I couldn’t remember the homework; I lost my book or notebook, etc.  If you miss a class as a result of a tardy or early dismissal, you are required to turn in the assignment to me or have it date stamped and put in my box or it is late. If you are in school and leave without turning in the assignment to me, it is late.

There will be a test and quiz for each chapter and unit.  Info from one chapter may find its way on to a later test of quiz.  All quizzes will be open notebook and open brain. All tests are strictly open brain.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes from other students,

If you are absent on the day before  a test or quiz is given and no new material is given, you are expected to take the test or quiz with everyone else.  All make up tests and quizzes are essay- no exceptions.  All make up tests and quizzes are essay.

We will have a number of research projects due each quarter.  All written reports must be submitted to www.turnitin.com  I will not accept written reports by email. All technology projects must be turned in onto www.pbworks.com, they must be properly uploaded by the start of class on the due date assigned or the project is late.  I will not accept it by email or by Google docs.

Study Skills:

The following study skills will be emphasized in this course:

·         reading & highlighting main ideas

·         note taking

·         organizing a notebook

·         creating flash cards to study for tests and the semester exams

·         writing

 Cheating:

Any student who is caught cheating* will receive a zero for that work and will be written up.  *(Cheating is defined as taking another’s knowledge or work without permission.)

n.b.  Any student who turns in the same assignment as another with font and text size changed is not doing his or her own original work.  This is cheating.  Helping another student with a homework assignment is not giving or providing them with answers that the student could not find. Copying another student's homework or giving your homework to another student to copy is cheating.. Please refer to the student handbook pp. 3, 36-37 for more information regarding the honor code and academic honesty.

All students will be required to write out and sign the Honor Code pledge on all graded assignments.  The pledge is found on page 3 of the handbook and states:

“I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment.”

Until the interim due date of the first quarter students will have an opportunity to go back and add it to assignments turned in without it without grade penalty.  The second half of the first quarter, students will lose 15%.  The second quarter, all assignments turned in without the honor code and signature will lose 25%.
